San Mateo County Wins Gold for Spotlighting Sustainable Gardening Wins Three Other Awards at San Francisco Flower and Garden Show

SAN MATEO, Calif. - An exhibit that illustrated a low-cost sustainable vegetable garden created by the San Mateo County Master Composting program won the Gold Medal and three other awards at this year's San Francisco Flower and Garden Show.

The garden creatively reused waste materials, including broken concrete, straw wattle and reclaimed cinder blocks, and demonstrated how to easily transition from a lawn to a sustainable vegetable garden. Nearly any homeowner could follow the steps to easily to convert a lawn to a bountiful vegetable garden.

The garden was designed in partnership with Common Ground Organic Garden Supply, 20 dedicated Master Composting volunteers and the Master Composting instructor Alane Weber to raise awareness about microbes that live in compost and our soil. The theme of the exhibit was, "Actinomycetes, Fungi and Worms, OH MY!" a fun way to help others learn about how types of bacteria (Actinomycetes) work with other fungi and worms to create rich soil and compost.

The volunteers of the program grew vegetables for the garden, built the raised beds, garden shed and gazebo. The County's Master Composters complete an extensive training program through the County and volunteer in the community to teach others about the benefits of healthy soils.
